XRUK statement on the riots

The rioting and looting scarring our streets and terrorising some of our most vulnerable communities has shocked us all to the core. Extinction Rebellion UK is devastated by these callous acts of violence and we are all left fearful for the wellbeing and safety of our friends.
XRUK stands in solidarity with all people affected by the events over the last few days, and we brace ourselves for what is to come. We know that in a world on the brink of climate and ecological collapse, these tensions are going to increase and be exploited. As long as we live in a racist, unequal system that values some lives more than others, none of us will be safe.
There is no place for hate anywhere, let alone in the climate and environment movement. We stand against this rhetoric spread by our unfit political system and toxic media which is infiltrating communities who have been ignored and disempowered.
Empathy, compassion and community care is at our core. We value all life and refuse to be turned against each other at this challenging time.
What can I do?
- Check in on your friends and neighbours, make plans to help others get home safe.
- Join the counter demonstrations to show solidarity with communities facing violence.
- Don’t go to a counter demonstration but cook food for the community or hold a vigil for peace.
- Speak out against the rhetoric of hate, violence and racism.
- Hold listening spaces for people to share and come together.
- Spread joy, with music, drums, song and laughter.
- Take direct action to dismantle the toxic system.
