Insure Our Survival Week of Action - Extinction Rebellion UK

Insure Our Survival Week of Action

This July marks one official year of the Insure Our Survival Campaign and we’re going to be celebrating in style! Throughout a Wave of Action from 2nd-14th July, the Insure Our Survival campaign is turning up the pressure on the fossil fuel insurers who are enabling climate breakdown. It’s time to push harder – to cancel carbon bombs, stop ecocide, and confront climate injustice.

This July, groups across the UK will target local “dirty insurers”, building the pressure for them to stop funding climate destruction. Without insurance, fossil fuel companies can’t extract more oil, coal and gas.

We’re asking everyone across the UK to take action against their local dirty insurers, with a heavy emphasis on potential insurers of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), Mozambique Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Arctic LNG 2, and Papua LNG, as well as Marsh, a broker of these destructive fossil fuel projects. From the streets to social media, we need your voices and creativity to make sure these companies know that we will resist their support of any carbon bomb.

Whether it’s physical demonstrations, creative actions, or digital disruption, every action counts. We need to highlight the devastating impact of these projects on communities, ecosystems, and the global climate.

EACOP is already displacing thousands of families in Uganda and Tanzania, threatening food and water security, and violating human rights. The LNGs threaten Indigenous communities and cultural heritage in the Russian Arctic and in Papua New Guinea, while the Mozambique LNG has been linked to violent conflict and militarisation. All of these oil and gas projects endanger critical ecosystems, many of which are protected areas of permafrost, rainforest and coastline [1, 2].

Insurers and brokers like Marsh are directly supporting climate destruction. By covering these projects, they enable human rights abuses and ecological devastation. These companies must act ethically by refusing to insure or broker such damaging projects.

Let’s send a clear message: Rule out insuring EACOP, and all new oil, gas and coal, or be held accountable!

We’ve been building momentum for a year. Thanks to thousands taking to the street in 2024 [3], we’ve seen major wins – and we need more. We don’t have twenty years. We need action now. Whether you’re ready to poster your high street or plan a bold shutdown, the Actions Menu provides something for every activist, whatever your experience or capacity.
