Rebellion begins tomorrow. Will you step up?

When scientists and doctors are gluing themselves to oil company headquarters and being arrested en masse, we should take that as a warning sign, shouldn’t we?

Well, that’s what’s happening and governments around the world are continuing to double down on fossil fuels. What on earth is going on?

This is what’s going on in the world of Extinction Rebellion:

People from all walks of life are rising up and refusing to be bystanders while the world is sold and burnt by those with power. Over the past week, scientists, doctors, nurses, teachers, students, engineers, mums, dads, grandparents and more have sat in roads, climbed on tankers, hung banners, handed out fliers or had conversations with people passing by about the emergency we face. We’re building towards a mass movement that cannot be ignored and everyone is needed.  Will you step up too?

What happened this week? (1st – 8th April)

XR and Just Stop Oil blocked oil facilities

From April 1st, Extinction Rebellion and the Just Stop Oil coalition blocked 10 oil facilities across the UK: Hythe, Hamble, West London, Grays, Navigator, Purfleet, Kingsbury, BP, Esso and Buncefield. Whilst XR used boats and oil drums to block access to the terminals, Just Stop Oil sat in roads, climbed on oil tankers, and dug tunnels. The actions are ongoing. As a result, the dilemma for the government will soon be determined.

Scientists sprayed fake oil on Shell’s building

On Wednesday, scientists calling for radical change in the face of the climate and ecological crisis took nonviolent direct action at the London headquarters of Shell. It was part of the world’s largest-ever scientist-led civil disobedience campaign. The group used modified fire extinguishers to spray biodegradable fake oil on the building. Meanwhile, they also posted scientific papers to the walls. They were joined by scientists around the world, including NASA climate scientist Peter Kalmus, who was arrested in LA.

XR Doctors and Nurses locked on in front of HM Treasury

Brave Doctors for Extinction Rebellion took action outside HM Treasury in London on World Health Day. They were calling for an end to the UK government’s financial support for fossil fuels. Six of them locked onto oil barrels in the road, whilst others held banners saying ‘For Health’s Sake: Stop Financing Fossil Fuels’.

Ocean Rebellion set a boat on fire

Ocean Rebellion lit up the ship sculpture outside the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). They used the words from António Guterres’ (UN Secretary-General) IPCC speech: “The world’s biggest polluters are guilty of arson of our only home.”

The oil slick below the ship, poured by the two Fossil Fool Oil Industry heads, was a testament to the continued ignorance of the IMO. Moreover, the IMO is a UN body that still allows the burning of Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO), even in the Arctic region.

At 7am this morning, rebels hung a large 22m x 3m banner from Tower Bridge in London. It reads ‘END FOSSIL FUELS NOW’. On the eve of Rebellion in London, that’s a sign that we intend to be easy to find and impossible to ignore over the coming week!

Tomorrow the Rebellion begins at Speaker’s Corner in Hyde Park, London at 10am. We will continue in resistance to stop all new fossil fuel investments. Will you step up and join in?

end fossil fuels now banner at Tower Bridge

We need everyone now to give fossil fuels the final shove out the door. In short, why not head down and be a part of this exciting moment in history? You are necessary, you are powerful, you are needed.

Now is the time, this is the moment. Don’t be a bystander while this beautiful world slips away.

Look up, step up. Join the Rebellion.
