We know thousands of you are horrified by the climate disasters unfolding around us.

Over the past four years we’ve become experts in training thousands of people to take part in and support low level nonviolent civil disobedience. And it gets results.

In fact, it’s exactly how we got our first big win – getting Parliament to declare an environment and climate emergency in 2019. Around 10,000 people working together did that. Imagine what 100,000 people coming out on the streets and refusing to leave could do.

The plan

We’ve got a plan to build towards April 2023 but we need you with us on this journey to make it work. There is a role for everyone in creating the change we all need!

SAVE THE DATE – October 14-16

We are working on a plan that sees Extinction Rebellion growing in numbers and building momentum towards Spring 2023. Politics as usual will do anything to avoid facing up to the reality of the climate and ecological crisis, so without large numbers out on the streets, our demands will be ignored.

On October 14-16 we will come together in London for a long weekend of action, outreach, music, talks and trainings, and loads more. Join our Open Call on Sunday Oct 2nd to find out more!

Before then beginning on Sept 20th, we will be travelling the entirety of the UK to grow the movement on the Change is Now Tour.

In a nutshell, the plan will centre people power and mass mobilisation at its heart, and be made up of the following phases:

The Bus Tour

We will launch our fleet of rebellion buses which will travel the length and breadth of the country, visiting local groups to celebrate their work, offering tools and resources in mobilisation and Citizen’s Assemblies, and building a narrative across the movement and the country – that we’re all in this together and together we can get ourselves out of it.

The Change is Now Tour aims to run at least one Peoples Assembly in each of the 12 XR Regions and Nations as we travel, to take the energy of this Rebellion up and down the UK and showcase our big solution: Citizen’s Assemblies on Climate Crisis Now.

Find out more about the tour here!

The Bus Tour conductors have decided to postpone the beginning of the tour until Sept 20th. This will help us connect with the most people. We are therefore pausing Week One and starting the tour with the stops as originally planned for Week Two. More information will follow on the timing of the Week One bus tour plans. Keep an eye out here!

Join the crew! We are still recruiting drivers, coordinators, social media people, and more!

October 14-16 – Long weekend of action in London

On 14th October, we invite everyone to come back to Westminster, London, for disruptive nonviolent civil disobedience and to join forces with other groups organising around the cost of living scandal.

This final piece of the puzzle is still coming together. With an autumn of direct action from multiple groups on the cards, there are plenty of ways to go out with a bang and work with other movements, setting us up for a period of growth and regeneration until the Spring. Watch this space!

Spring 2023 – THE BIG ONE

This will centre major government disruption over a prolonged period until the government agrees to empower an independent Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.

Integrated with our methodical mobilisation campaign, Project 3.5, we will pledge to sign up 100k people by Spring 2023 to come back to London for major nonviolent civil resistance to win on our demands. Imagine the 2003 march against the Iraq war, but this time we refuse to leave until our demands are met.

FAQs

How do we get posters/flyers for Paint the Streets?

You can use this online form.

Will there be training available?

Yes. There’s a whole area dedicated to upskilling and education with trainings, talks and workshops.

Why aren’t we supporting Just Stop Oil (JSO) on 1st October?

When XRUK announced the September 10th date the political landscape was very different. Since then lots of groups have come out and announced that they are mobilising towards October in response to the multitude of crises and ahead of COP27 which starts on 6th November. This rebellion is designed to feed into October in a really strategic way to support the huge groundswell that is happening.

We have a broad section of society that is massively disenfranchised with the Government because of the cost of living crisis and energy scandal. We have huge swathes of people taking strike action and doing non-payment  – That is civil disobedience!

Discontent is in the air!

The union strikers are being vilified by the corporate media and our Government whilst energy companies are absolutely rinsing people dry whilst publicly and perversely celebrating record profits.

The global heatwave, with ludicrous temperatures is hammering the message home that the climate crisis is happening now – it’s impossible to ignore.

We’re getting to a point where the imbalance of wealth and power is so large that people, who’ve all got very similar interests, are starting to take action.

We have Don’t Pay UK.

We have Enough is Enough.

We have Just Stop Oil.

We have Greenpeace, School Strikers, Animal Rebellion, Peace and Justice Movement, trade unions, students and many, many more all mobilising for October.

XR has aligned strategically with the wider ecology of movements, which includes Just Stop Oil and discussions have been had around dates to collectively create the greatest impact across the whole of October… so that disruption is prolonged and targeted.

Will the 3-day weekend be suitable for families?

Yes, definitely! XR Families and Grandparents & Elders have teamed up and will run a Families area with kids’ activities and more. If planning on camping, we strongly recommend linking up with XR Families and camp together.

Read the XR Families FAQ here.

How do you see food, water and toilets working?

There are Sanitation and Sustenance teams working to ensure a safe and wholesome camp. They can use your help! We are all crew and the more of us that get involved to help, the better our camp will be.

The Bus Tour

Why are we using buses?

The buses are practical devices enabling us to achieve our strategic goals. They also tie all the phases together.

Are the buses electric?

No. Electric buses are very expensive. 50% of a vehicle’s carbon footprint (electric, petrol or diesel) is locked into its production. It is more environmentally sound to use diesel vehicles for as long as possible, as long as they are running efficiently, than it is to buy new electric vehicles.

How do we sign up to help?

There are many ways to get involved!

Join the Bus Tour preparation team here: https://t.me/+fo64fznQQyY0OWY8
This is a team built to help develop the bus tour and link in with Nations & Regions. Some examples of this work: logistics, creative, tour route planning, local group liaising…

Or come along for the ride! Apply to join one of the Bus Crews here: https://xrb.link/Cx50HFr35
This is for people who want to join one of the buses at different stages of the tour, who are able to contribute different skills and help to actively mobilise new and old rebels!

October 14th-16th

What’s the plan to put pressure on the Government?

Sheer numbers!

This rebellion is designed to feed into October in a really strategic way to support the huge groundswell that is happening.

We have a broad section of society which is massively disenfranchised by the Government because of the cost of living crisis and the energy scandal. We have huge swathes of people taking strike action and doing non-payment  – that is civil disobedience! Discontent is in the air!

The union strikers are being vilified by the corporate media and our Tory Government whilst energy companies are absolutely rinsing people dry whilst publicly and perversely celebrating record profits.

The global heatwave, with incalescent temperatures is hammering the message home that the climate crisis is happening now – it’s impossible to ignore and getting harder to deny.

We’re getting to a point where that imbalance of wealth and power is so very large that people, who’ve all got very similar interests, are starting to take action.

We have Don’t Pay UK.

We have Enough is Enough.

We have Just Stop Oil.

We have Greenpeace, School Strikers, Animal Rebellion, Peace and Justice Movement, trade unions, students and many, many more all mobilising for October.

I haven’t been to any previous Extinction Rebellion’s events and am not a part of a local rebel community, is this a problem?

No, not at all. We welcome everyone with open arms as long as you act within our principles and values… https://extinctionrebellion.uk/the-truth/about-us/

We suggest you try and find a local group to be part of as this will enrich your experience and help you keep linked in. You can find your closest group using this map:

How can I get involved if I’m not on Telegram/social media?

Most important two steps you can do right now:

Put yourself forward for a 2-4 hour per week role on XR’s Volunteer website: https://xrb.link/t4EN2ogR9

This list will keep being updated with urgent roles needed to help prepare the movement for October, so keep checking it out to see if there are roles you might be interested in.

Will there be a digital Rebellion?

Yes. Details coming soon

Is there a pathway for disabled people who can’t do much in-person stuff?

Yes, we have lots of roles available that can be done from home… Back office arrest support (backoffice@riseup.net) for example or helping out with Digital Rebellion… Take Action Here: digitalrebellion.uk

Is there help available to cover transport cost?

Yes, we want as many Rebels as possible to join us in London. Read and fill this form.

How was the Rebellion strategy agreed upon? Was this a centralised or decentralised process?

Through an extensive feedback and debrief process that feeds in from the nations and regions into the central circles. The plan is then formulated by the Rebellion Planning Team (who hold the mandate) with input from Action Circle, The Strategy Circle, The Political Circle, Action Support and the Hive (regional representation). All those circles are made up of rebels from Local Groups all over the UK.
