‘Defend Human Rights’: Extinction Rebellion and Kill the Bill call on House of Lords to reject Public Order Bill

From 5pm today, crowds gathered outside Parliament as “draconian” anti-protest laws in the Public Order Bill reached a crucial stage in the House of Lords. Twelve protesters from Extinction Rebellion have occupied the public viewing platform in the Peers Chamber and intend to remain there throughout the debate. They are wearing T-shirts printed with the words: ‘Defend Human Rights’.

Extinction Rebellion posts blue plaques for MPs who voted against protection for rivers

Over 80 blue plaques in the style of English Heritage's London blue plaques have appeared on UK beaches and rivers on Saturday 28 January.[1] The plaques hoped to highlight the decision made by UK politicians to block a law that would see better protection for rivers from raw sewage dumping.[2] The plaques have been installed around the UK by various environmental groups including Extinction Rebellion (XR) and Surfers Against Sewage. Some blue plaque unveilings will be accompanied by actions and protests.

BREAKING: Barclays 7 given 2 years unconditional suspended sentence for breaking glass during an emergency

At 4.30pm this afternoon, seven women attended sentencing at Southwark Crown Court in London for carefully cracking windows at Barclays HQ in Canary Wharf, to draw attention to Barclays’ financing of fossil fuels and to call on the bank to stop accelerating the climate emergency. All seven women were given two years unconditional suspended sentences. 

BREAKING: Extinction Rebellion paints Michael Gove’s office black over Cumbria coal mine decision

At 11am this morning, Extinction Rebellion is taking action outside the Department of Levelling Up, Housing & Communities in London in light of Michael Gove’s contentious decision to allow coal mining at Whitehaven, Cumbria. Black paint is being poured down the sloped walls towards the front doors of the Marsham Street Department, two people are in front of the entrance attached to each other through a lock-on tube with the words ‘END COAL’ on it.

UNITE TO SURVIVE: Extinction Rebellion drops banner from Westminster Bridge to launch 100 Days campaign

BREAKING: Just after 8am this morning, Extinction Rebellion UK dropped a large banner from Westminster Bridge in London that reads ‘APRIL 21: UNITE TO SURVIVE’. A group had marched with flags from Jubilee Gardens along Belvedere Road where they stood in single file off the road, forming a chain across the length of the bridge. When there, an important message was passed along a human chain from one side of the bridge to the other, symbolising connection across divides.

We recognise and celebrate the power of disruption to raise the alarm and believe that constantly evolving tactics is a necessary approach. BREAKING: ‘Judgement validates Barclays’ deadly support for fossil fuels’ in XR vs Barclays case

Seven women were found guilty of criminal damage to Barclays HQ in Southwark Crown Court this afternoon.  The defendants - Rosemary Annie Webster, 64, Cazzie Wood, 53, Gabby Ditton, 28, Lucy Porter, 48, Niki Stickells, 52, Sophie Cowen, 31 and Zoe Cohen, 52 - were initially charged with just under £100k worth of criminal damage at Barclays HQ in Canary Wharf in April 2021.
