The right to protest is being threatened like never before.
Climate activists have seen key rights erased, and juries are being shut out of decision-making.
Free Political Prisoners
It’s official, our climate is in breakdown.
With the average global temperature hitting 1.6C last year, we have breached the 1.5C limit set by the Paris Climate Agreement as a ‘safe’ maximum. Hurricanes, floods, fires — everything is escalating now, even faster than climate scientists predicted.
But fossil fuel mogul Lord Walney released an ‘independent’ government report attacking climate activists. A vital ‘consent’ defence was removed in 2024, erasing jury powers and protestor rights treasured since 1971.
This is not the only shocking attack on democracy launched against environmental scientists and activists. People have even been banned from using the words ‘climate change’ in court, but enough is enough.
Many of those who have dared to highlight the danger we are in have been sent to jail. Now, more than ever, we need to defend our right to peaceful protest.
Join us in protest
On 29th and 30th January, 16 climate activists appealed their combined 41-year jail terms for daring to stand up for our planet’s future.
Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth agree that every organisation, campaign group and individual who supports this democratic right is affected by the outcome of this appeal. The UN declared what is happening in the UK as ‘not acceptable in a democracy’ and a violation of national law.
There was a vigil and rally from 9am each day outside the Royal Courts of Justice in London until at least mid-afternoon with events, speeches, and entertainment in solidarity with the ‘Lord’ Walney 16, in protest against corruption and in demand of our constitutional rights back.
This is just the most recent example of our hard work. Watch this space for details of our next move and how you can join in.
