NEW – What emergency? https://rebellion.earth/the-truth/the-emergency/
In April, thousands of people took to the streets of London due to the climate and ecological emergency we face, with many of them willing to be arrested for this cause, for life itself.
More than 1,130 put their bodies on the line to secure our future and were arrested during non-violent civil disobedience. Those people come from all walks of life; they are young and old, doctors, students, pensioners, teenagers, academics, nurses and so on.
Through the actions of these brave people the climate and ecological emergency has made news around the world like never before. UK Parliament, the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, and the Irish government shortly after, all declared a climate emergency due to the courageous action taken by these individuals. They knew the risks involved in voluntary arrest and they were prepared to take them. For many, it’s a necessary price to pay to protect our children and the rest of nature from the devastation that is coming if we do not change course.
We are disappointed to hear that the Metropolitan Police intend to push to charge all 1,130 rebels who were arrested during the International Rebellion. These protesters are truth tellers and their truth has been recognised by Parliament. We are in a climate and ecological emergency of our own making, with the collapse in biodiversity and rapid loss of wildlife all creating a huge risk to the future of humanity. Is this the example the UK wants to make for how it treats those that tell the truth?
The lives of our children hang in the balance and those in power need to understand that means we will not stop standing up for life on earth and taking action. We can’t. And it’s not just our children we’re trying to protect, it’s yours too.
About Extinction Rebellion:
Time has almost entirely run out to address the ecological crisis which is upon us, including the 6th mass species extinction and abrupt, runaway climate change. Societal collapse and mass death are seen as inevitable by scientists and other credible voices, with human extinction also a possibility, if rapid action is not taken.
Extinction Rebellion believes it is a citizen’s duty to rebel, using peaceful civil disobedience, when faced with criminal inactivity by their Government.
Extinction Rebellion’s key demands are:
- Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change.
- Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
- Government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
