Release the redacted National Security Assessment!

Extinction Rebellion members from across the UK are coming together for three days full of ‘Love & Rage’ in London to demand that the government release the full, unredacted National Security Assessment warning of profound threats to Britain from climate breakdown, biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse. 

Drawing on scientific evidence, the government’s own intelligence-style assessment reveals a stark reality that the country will soon face due to ecosystem collapse, unless imminent, drastic action is taken to safeguard the public. 

What we have been allowed to see is damning. The government concludes with high confidence that crop failures, water insecurity, collapsing fisheries, infectious disease and food shortages will be on Britain’s doorstep as soon as 2030.

The Government knows that climate breakdown is here, yet where is their plan? How do they intend to secure a liveable future for the British people?

The assessment was due to be published in October 2025. It wasn’t. After a Freedom of Information request, the Government published a redacted version on 20 January 2026. A longer version exists and has reportedly been seen by media organisations. Yet even Parliament’s Environmental Audit Committee says it was refused access. MPs challenged ministers repeatedly in June and July. On 3 September, MPs from across parties returned to the issue in a dedicated Westminster Hall debate, but the full assessment is still being withheld.

XRUK calls on the Government to release the FULL UNCENSORED National Security Assessment report on “Global biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and national security”.

We also demand they hold a UK wide briefing on the Climate and Nature Risks and Act Now to mitigate against the serious threats to UK security.

The security assessment talks about accelerating breakdown of the natural systems that keep Britain fed, watered, healthy and secure. It warns of increased food and water insecurity, migration, organised crime, political instability, pandemics, conflict and competition between countries for increasingly scarce resources.

The government’s refusal to make the full document publicly available has sparked outrage across the political spectrum.

When Extinction Rebellion burst onto the scene nearly 8 years ago, the message of floods, fires, drought, environmental and climate breakdown was met by most of the media with ridicule and disdain. Now it’s here, it’s happening, and it’s time for the government, business, media and society to act.

And the first step is to tell the truth.
