Let’s find common ground on water
October 27, 2026 by Extinction Rebellion
Extinction Rebellion are finding out what people really think about the future of water. The campaign, using the online tool Polis, is open for engagement between Monday 19 October and Thursday 19 November 2026.
After decades of extreme weather, ecosystem breakdown and the displacement of millions of people worldwide, the future safety of the planet’s water has come to a head.
Polis is a tool which helps gather views and build common ground among people from all backgrounds, regions, interests and demographics. Using ‘seed statements’, or written ideas, developed during XR’s three day ‘Love and Rage’ conference held in September, the platform will encourage users to agree, disagree or pass on ideas and share their own on the topic of water. As more people contribute to the conversation, Polis will draw together areas of agreement, even across more divisive and difficult topics.
Once the deadline has been reached, the Extinction Rebellion data team will build a report based on the insights gathered by Polis. This will include where the most people agreed, and where the most people disagreed, and ultimately what participants really think about the water crisis in the UK. They will then use this evidence to engage local groups and eventually the UK government, urging them to take more effective action to protect and future-proof our water resources.
This groundbreaking method of understanding how people feel about topics that impact their future has been used successfully on multiple occasions – for example in Taiwan, on how to regulate Uber. Find out more here.
Once this iteration of Polis closes on 19th November, Extinction Rebellion will share the results widely, and begin using the evidence as a lobbying tool. To find out what people really think about the future of water, keep an eye on the XRUK website and social media channels.
