  • Today, Extinction Rebellion met the team of advisers supporting COP president and Chilean environment minister, Carolina Schmidt.
  • The meeting focused on how to generate global urgency for all of us to act between now and COP26 in Glasgow next year.
  • There was agreement that this process is not on course to address the planetary emergency.
  • Everyone agreed that the radical change required needs to come from a shift in narrative about the Climate & Ecological Emergency.
  • 2.30pm today at the entrance of IFEMA: ‘COLGAMOS DE UN HILO / WE ARE HANGING BY A THREAD’

This morning, representatives of Extinction Rebellion met the team of advisers supporting COP president and Chilean environment minister, Carolina Schmidt. The representatives of Extinction Rebellion were Skeena Rathor, Tim Crosland and Marc Lopatin.

It was an opportunity for Extinction Rebellion to table our three global demands – which we will be announcing shortly – as evidence of the missing urgency that has plagued COP meetings for years.

Key takeaways :

  • The meeting focused on how to generate global urgency for all of us to act between now and COP26 in Glasgow next year.
  • There was agreement that this process is not on course to address the planetary emergency.
  • Everyone agreed that the radical change required needs to come from a shift in narrative about the Climate & Ecological Emergency

Tim Crosland from Extinction Rebellion said: “Historically the UN talks have divided over issues of responsibility and equity between North and South. We talked to the Chilean Presidency’s team about this and remain open to talks with the UK Presidency. We know this process isn’t working and it’s credibility is vanishing. Now is the moment to come together across our differences. Let’s not go down with 2020 hindsight”.

Skeena Rathor of Extinction Rebellion said: “Extinction Rebellion appreciated the opportunity to meet the COP25 President’s team. We got an honest conversation with great humility because we wish to listen and learn. We know this global crisis needs our togetherness and deep collaboration. We want to work in trust and cooperation for systems transformation. For systems that can allow the complex interdependent web of life to flourish.”

Join us tomorrow (Saturday 14 December) time TBC at the entrance of IFEMA: ‘COLGAMOS DE UN HILO / WE ARE HANGING BY A THREAD’

Tomorrow (Saturday 14 December) time TBC by the entrance of COP25 (IFEMA), Extinction Rebellion invites people to join us to bear witness to these important times we live in as COP25 comes towards a close – there will be talks, an interactive work of art with twenty-five people present symbolising the twenty-five COPs that have thus far failed to protect life. We will also be unveling and opening to consultation Extinction Rebellion’s new global demands.

¿Cuántas cumbres más? ¿Cuántas vidas más? ¿Cuántas muertes más? / How many COPs? How many lives? How many deaths?

We find ourselves in a momentous moment. This is potentially the last day of COP25. We stand in front of the world’s leaders who are guiding us to disaster. COPs have been happening since 1995 and not a single one has proven to be effective to the task at hand.

Everyone is welcome to come together and share their truths in this moment.
