Scientists for Extinction Rebellion Page

Join us, Scientists for XR and listen to the science LIVE on the Streets of London! We’ll be marching from The Department of Education via Downing Street to Trafalgar Square, stopping off along the way to tell the truth of the science of The Climate & Ecological Emergency. The march will feature 100 people in labcoats to represent the 1600 scientists worldwide who have signed the Scientists Declaration, in supporting non-violent direct action against government inaction against the climate and ecological emergency. We appreciate non-scientist Rebels wearing labcoats to represent the scientists who could not travel sustainably to this event.

The march will reach Trafalgar Square at 3pm for main speeches, in the form of an open seminar. This will be hosted by Dr Emily Grossman – Climate Communicator and internationally acclaimed science author and television personality – and will feature Professor James Bullock, professor of ecology and biodiversity loss specialist, and Dr Peter Eardland, paleoclimatologist and oceanographer at University College London.

Here’s a video of our last action, to give you a flavour: https://youtu.be/k_aNNAglCTk

This Action is designed to highlight the seriousness with which the government needs to tackle The Climate and Ecological Emergency in the next parliament (the one after, in all likelihood being too late).

“We can’t allow the role of scientists to be to just write papers and publish them in obscure journals and hope somehow that somebody out there will pay attention. We need to be rethinking the role of the scientist and engage with how social change happens at a massive and urgent scale. We can’t allow science as usual.” Dr. Julia Steinberger https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/10/14/citing-moral-duty-take-radical-action-over-700-scientists-endorse-mass-civil

It takes a lot for lab-loving scientists to take to the streets, so come along and hear the truth being spoken into the open November air.

“This Emergency is the greatest threat humanity has ever faced. It is man-made and we have to stop making it worse, or – for the first time – we will face a catastrophe we cannot think, invent or buy our way out of. It will affect 100% of us and everything we love. The future of our children, and our grandchildren, is at stake. We must act radically, before it’s too late. We cannot afford to wait another second.” – Dr. Emily Grossman https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/daily-mirror-climate-change-crisis-20812267

WE’RE INVITING:

YOU, the people of London and beyond, to come and walk with us and listen to the science!

Volunteers, some of whom may be arrestable, to wear a lab coat and march at the front. We aim to have the march led by 100 people wearing lab coats, each representing 10 of the 1000+ Scientists worldwide who have signed the Scientists Declaration of Rebellion. This declaration, supporting civil disobedience for the cause now has over 1500 signatures from those with a Masters or PhD in relevant Sciences: http://bit.ly/ScientistsDeclaration
100 Lab coat wearers is a great way to represent The Declaration with a lower carbon footprint than getting all signatories to London 🙂 If you are up for this, please get in touch! Let us know if you have your own lab coat or if you’ll need to borrow one for the day. Arrive from 11.30am on the day.

XR Drummers, circus performers and creatives to join us for the march, and short performances on stops in order to provide an introduction for our speakers. Please bring own drum and arrive from 11.30am!

We’ve invited many Politicians and Policy Makers to come to Trafalgar Square for 3pm, such as Caroline Lucas, Clive Lewis, Jeremy Corbyn, John McDonnell, Sian berry, Caroline Green, Tom Copley, Florence Eshalomi, Lady Jenny Jones, Zack Goldsmith, as well as Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Governer of the Bank of England Mark Carney have also been invited.

UPDATE: It’s TOMORROW!
