How to Change the World – Climate Crisis Film Festival

01 December 2019
19:30 - 21:20

Deptford Cinema, London, United Kingdom

hosted by

Deptford Cinema

The CLIMATE CRISIS FILM FESTIVAL presents a screening of HOW TO CHANGE THE WORLD (Jerry Rothwell, 2015), an honest warts-and-all portrait of the (often messy) early days of Greenpeace.

Prior to the screening, we have an amazing GUEST PANEL with Director of How to Start a Revolution – Ruaridh Arrow, Conservation Biologist Charlie Gardner and a representative from Extinction Rebellion.

Each panelist certainly brings something special to the table, so don’t miss out on what will surely be an exciting discussion around how the teachings of Gene Sharp have influenced a radical approach to the powerful actions taken by environmentalists recently.

HOW TO CHANGE THE WORLD, together with HOW TO START A REVOLUTION (2011), and our GUEST PANEL is part of the DIRECT ACTION double bill. Both films look at activism and the tools that might help us take the first step towards active engagement and civil disobedience.

***You can buy tickets for this individual film or SAVE £3 when purchasing tickets for the whole double bill.***

***THE FILM:***

In 1971, a small group of Canadian activists sailed an old fishing boat called Green Peace straight for the middle of an atomic bomb test site… and the modern environmental movement was born.

Using never-seen-before archive footage alongside an eclectic 60s-70s soundtrack, HOW TO CHANGE THE WORLD focuses on the three campaigns that shaped Greenpeace’s early years.

The film pays tribute to their early adoption of the concept of “going viral,” harnessing the power of images (which they called “media mind bombs”) to transform consciousnesses. At the same time, it’s a cautionary tale on how ballooning egos and power struggles can get in the way of a movement’s effectiveness.

“Flat-out excellent.” — 3AW

“One of the year’s most satisfying documentaries.” — The Los Angeles Times

“Polished and paced like a caper flick, the film captures the excitement of the make-it-up-as-you-go early days, while also highlighting the stresses that come after a movement takes on a life of its own.” — The New York Times
